About this species
Recorded altitude range0m to 6m
Species text
DistributionThe species is confined to coastal sites south-east of a line from the Wash to the Severn. There are scattered localities in lowland northern Europe, contrasting with S. rupicola which occurs at higher altitudes (Logunov & Kronestedt 1997).
Habitat and ecology
The species occurs on coastal shingle and amongst tidal litter on shell shingle and sand adjacent to saltmarsh. Adults are found April to October.
Status
S. inexpectus was described as a new species and earlier British records of S. rupicola refer to this species. Although there has been an increase in the number of 10 km squares occupied in the past 30 years, there has been no clear expansion in its overall range.
Threats
Public pressure, shingle and gravel extraction and sea level rise.
Management and conservation
None apart from the reduction of disturbance.
